Bernalillo County couple accused of abusing 2-year-old son

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Bernalillo County Sheriff's officials say a mother and her boyfriend have been arrested for alleged child abuse. They say Monica Lopez and Matthew Barraza were taken into custody Monday on suspicion of child abuse, conspiracy and criminal sexual contact. Sheriff's officials say Lopez dropped her 2-year-old son off at a daycare facility Monday. Staff at the daycare say they noticed several bite marks and numerous other unexplained bruises on the boy's body. Lopez says she sometimes bites her son on his buttocks out of anxiety and so does Barraza, who is the child's father. But authorities say Lopez was unable to explain the other bruises and marks. Lopez remains jailed on a $10,000 bond. Barraza is out of jail after posting a $2,000 bond. It's unclear if they have lawyers.
