Gallup man gets life in prison for murder, witness tampering

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A Gallup man has been sentenced to life in federal prison after being convicted of first-degree murder and witness tampering.
Prosecutors say 47-year-old Brian Tony was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Santa Fe.
They say the evidence at trial showed Tony hit a man on the head with a hammer in May 2016.
The victim's body was found in a ravine near Churchrock and had more than 23 stab wounds.
Found nearby was a hammer and large rock with bloodstains along with the victim's empty knife sheath.
Prosecutors say Tony committed witness tampering while awaiting trial at the Santa Fe County Detention Center.
Tony allegedly made more than 1,000 calls to friends and relatives in an attempt to keep witnesses from testifying.
He was convicted in September 2017.
