ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — DNA evidence reportedly has enabled Santa Fe police to identify a suspect in a cold case involving a 1992 rape in the northern New Mexico city.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that DNA collected in 1992 when a 16-year-old girl was raped was stored and recently tested matches that of a 51-year-old Santa Fe man.
The man was required to give a new DNA sample on Dec. 30. He hasn't been charged so far in the rape case.
Santa Fe police have been taking cold-case evidence to the state crime lab for testing with newly developed techniques that can reveal minuscule traces of DNA.
The victim in the 1992 case was raped by a man who had been a passenger in a van that was equipped for handicapped people.
