Vacant Building Near UNM Burned

Monday evening Albuquerque Firefighters were dispatched to an blaze in a vacant building in a mixed use area of the University of New Mexico campus near Lomas and University, NE.

Cinnamon Blair, a UNM spokeswoman, said the house at 1801 Mesa Vista, is privately owned. It is fenced off and the windows were boarded up.

Tom Ruiz, a spokesman for Albuquerque Fire Rescue, said crews were dispatched at 5:17 p.m. to reports of a structure fire in a commercial building. Columns of thick black smoke and flames could be seen rising from the area.

“AFR initiated defensive operations because of collapse potential of the structure and extreme fire conditions,” Ruiz wrote in an email. “A second alarm was dispatched to assist with fire operations because of the potential of the fire to spread to other structures.”He said in all 18 units went to the scene and were able to keep the fire from spreading. They continued to work throughout the night to make sure the fire was extinguished.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation
