Report: New Mexico agencies not complying on forfeiture law

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Records show New Mexico law enforcement agencies aren't complying with required reporting linked to a law that bans civil forfeiture.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that records requests found no law enforcement agency has posted its forfeitures annually to the state Department of Public Safety since 2015.
Department spokesman Herman Lovato said in response to an inquiry from The New Mexican that "with the assistance of public interest groups," the department had discovered the forfeiture data had not been published.
New Mexico sparked a nationwide trend when it banned civil forfeiture in 2015 — becoming the first state to end the practice of seizing and selling the property of people who had been accused, though not convicted, of a crime.
Thirteen states followed suit.
