Lawmakers Approach Shutdown Deal

As the House and Senate worked their way through Friday, it was clear a government shutdown would be avoided. An agreement was reached on a $1 trillion spending plan to keep the government funded through to October. But the path to agreement on several end-of-year extensions, including the payroll tax holiday and unemployment benefits, remained unclear.
